3rd Annual CSO Open

June
25-26th,
2005
Nelscott Beach,
Lincoln
City,
Oregon
As everything was beginning to come together
for the contest, the weather forecast continued to
look grim. As I was driving to the contest site Saturday
morning at 5 am it was sprinkling. The contest beach,
Nelscott Beach in Lincoln City, was the only bright
spot in the entire area. Everywhere else was fogged
in! We took this to be a good sign. Our "surfer
friendly" contest format allowed us to obtain
four different beach permits. A week before the contest
a nice sandbar formed at Nelscott, and shortly after
we made the call for that beach.
We had a record 60+ surfers in the contest,
a lot of whom were surfers we've been praying a number
of years for. Saturday turned out to be a beautiful
day, reaching the mid 70's. The wind stayed down enough
to allow for surfable conditions. Everyone was stoked!
A free BBQ and Surfchurch on the beach closed the evening.
The next day we were greeted with
glassy conditions and 2-4' A-frame peaks. The level
in the water was outstanding and everyone on the
beach was treated to quite a show as the tide filled
in for the finals. Deeper and
more meaningful relationships developed with many
local surfers. Each surfer walked away with a Surfer's
Bible!
Here's what one of our judges had to
say about the contest, "I
think it really accomplished its goals on many, many
levels. I think 60+ surfers getting together, setting
such a positive example of brother-and-sisterhood
is a powerful expression of God's love for all men
and women. I am honored to have been a part of that." That
sums up why we go to all the effort of putting on
a contest. We kept hearing from non-believing competitors
that they really enjoyed the atmosphere at our contest.
It was obvious to us that the contest had been covered
in prayer. By the way, the day after the contest,
we got dumped on with a lot of rain.
