The
2nd
Annual
CSO
Open
organizers
woke
up
Saturday
morning,
June
27th,
to
long
overhead
rights,
glassy
conditions,
and
sunny
skies
at
Roads
End,
Oregon.
Competitors
from
Seaside
to
Gold
Beach
to
Bend
showed
up
for
the
first
heats
at
9am
and
surfed
until
the
25
knot
wind
blew
out
the
surf
on
Sunday
afternoon.
As
the
competition
increased,
surfers
battled
for
entry
into
the
Champ
round
or
the
Plate
round,
a
consolation
bracket
that
gave
most
surfers
a
second
chance.
The
competition
format
used
(H2
out
of
Australia)
provides
for
more
surfing
and
more
chances
to
win.
Unlike
most
competitions
where
the
top
3
advance,
in
this
event,
every
surfer
gets
at
least
2
heats
to
gain
entrance
into
the
champ
rounds.
With
over
50
surfers
this
year
and
perfect
contest
conditions,
the
crowd
at
Roads
End
swelled
to
watch
41
year
old
Irwin
Langeberg
land
360’s
and
throw
spray
off
long
backside
cutbacks
on
left
and
rights.
Langeberg
took
first
place
in
both
the
shortboard
masters
and
shortboard
open
divisions.
The
local
crew
sent
home
most
of
the
best
surfers
from
Seaside,
Portland
and
Coos
Bay… except
for
Matt
Jenkinson
and
Hayley
Espelund.
Jenkinson,
the
24
year
old
Coast
Guard
rescue
swimmer
from
Coos
Bay
took
2nd
in
the
shortboard
championships
with
powerful
top
turns,
late
take
offs
and
floaters
that
impressed
every
judge.
Espelund
is
a
team
rider
from
Cleanline
Surf
in
Seaside
and
proved
to
be
an
outstanding
surfer
in
competitive
conditions.
Taking
3rd
in
the
shortboard
finals
and
first
place
in
the
longboard
finals
was
Rob
Russo,
an
up
and
coming
board
shaper
and
designer
from
Lincoln
City.
Contest
prizes
included
surfboards,
wetsuits,
board
bags,
and
accessories
from
Dakine,
Hammersurf,
Gorge
Performance,
Lincoln
City
Surf
Shop,
Safari
Town,
Cleanline
Surf,
Ryders,
Cobian,
Ezekiel,
RipCurl,
Excel,
and
Russo
Surfboards
among
others.
